AEW World Tag Team Championship
Private Party versus The Young Bucks (c)

The Young Bucks have been busy! After beating Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta at All Out 2024, the Bucks two and a half weeks later would have to face Will Ospreay and Kyle Fletcher to once again defend the titles. Thankfully, the GOD MODE of Will Ospreay is always broken by the dumbest reasons (this time he didn’t want to use an illegal object against the EVP’s that allegedly hold the entire company down with their thumb) and if no dumb reason exists he is just better than everyone, so the Bucks squeak out a victory.

Unfortunately, they don’t on AEW Rampage with Jack Perry against Katsuyori Shibata and Private Party. Much like what happened on the second ever episode of Dynamite, Isiah Kassidy broke up the TK Driver from the apron and Marq Quen rolled up Matt Jackson for the victory.

Private Party needed something for momentum. They haven’t had any momentum all year. Arguably haven’t had any momentum for several years. In 2024 they are 5-6 in 2v2 tag matches and 2-4 in 3 way/4 way tag matches for a 7-10 record. Not exactly championship material. They also suffered a humiliating loss just in September against Blackpool Combat Club, after Blackpool Combat Club essentially beat them senseless multiple times, even when Private Party was trying to sneak attack them.

But with the win against the Bucks in trios action, Private Party have since beat Iron Savages and then won a shot at the AEW World Tag Championship winning a three way tag match against House of Black and Top Flight. WrestleDream 2024 will be the first AEW World Tag shot for Isiah and Marq since September 28, 2022 on Rampage where they lost a three way tag match which also included Butcher and the Blade and The Acclaimed. The last time Private Party worked a pay per view and it wasn’t a Buy In or a Zero Hour? March 7, 2021 in the Casino Tag Team Royale at Revolution 2021. Their only other pay per view match was for the AEW World Tag Team Championship in a match that also involved the Lucha Bros. and SCU. Yeah, SCU were Tag Champions. Full Gear 2019.

This is a massive match for Private Party and will be a big opportunity to step up. In Tag In The Outrunners I mentioned Private Party as a Tier 3 tag team. A team not believable to be an AEW World Tag contender and definitely not on the level of Young Bucks or FTR.

This match isn’t about suddenly rocketing them up to that level. Pushing a team that hard after all of the muck they walked into usually leads to people feeling like you’re overpushing an act and fans are quick to turn on acts overpushed. But this is about moving a Tier 3 tag team to Tier 2-A, a tier that right now only sports The Acclaimed. That’s a tag team that isn’t on the FTR/Young Bucks level but is still credible to be tag champions and credible as a tag title defence.

Private Party is going to get a major opportunity on pay per view to show that they deserved this chance after all those years. There are going to be a lot of doubters. Private Party did wrestle The Young Bucks earlier this year and lost, and the thought for some after that match was that Private Party just isn’t there yet.

For The Young Bucks, they’ve taken criticism in the past being in their own little bubble, and going up against Private Party is a good opportunity for a team in their bubble but also not. They’ve clearly taken a shine to Private Party but haven’t really got them to the next level after all of their encounters. The Bucks have a chance to make a tag team at WrestleDream, even if they beat them. They can make Private Party a true rival. And if they lose? They need to lose in a way that cements Private Party as one of the best tag teams in the world. A match only The Young Bucks can pull off.

For a lot of people this isn’t a strong match on the card because they will feel like of course The Bucks will win and Private Party isn’t a real threat to the championship titles. But to make contenders you have to give people a spotlight and see who shines the brightest. Time for Private Party to shine.
