Every time I open about discussing The Hurt Syndicate as AEW World Tag Team Champions I am always trying to hold back on just how much I dislike their title run.
I’m sure for a lot of AEW fans they don’t understand. The Hurt Syndicate is very much over. They look cool, they act cool, they beat up their opponents. What isn’t there to like? Didn’t I want some hosses throwing fools around? What’s my real problem with this?
My real problem is that All Elite Wrestling has literally the greatest tag teams of this century in the company working tag matches outside of the top of the tag division and have been putting Hurt Syndicate to shame every time.
It’s very hard in a kayfabe sense to believe that the Hurt Syndicate are the best tag team in the world when on Saturday you had FTR proving they are the best tag team in the world against The Outrunners. Does anyone think Jetspeed would have had a better match with Hurt Syndicate than what they had against The Young Bucks back in April?
You then have ProtoShita of Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher. I’m supposed to believe these two young men who have yet to peak in their wrestling potential are not better than Lashley and Benjamin, two veteran wrestlers who have to slow everything to a crawl so they can keep up?
There’s other teams like Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong who you watch and just wonder, if they faced Hurt Syndicate, would Hurt Syndicate really look like the best tag team in the world? Or would it be all about Paragon having to make them look good?
That’s what frustrates me. I don’t feel like Hurt Syndicate are the best tag team in the world, but they rule over the tag division and the teams who would blow them by in the dust don’t touch the tag rankings to allow Hurt Syndicate to look like big bad guys. It’s a facade, and not in the way wrestling is a facade of real fighting. It’s manipulating things in such a way so the best teams don’t get to look the best, and a team way out of the Top 5 best tag teams in the company now has to beat low ranked teams because those are the teams they can look good against.
The build up to their match with Jetspeed started with Jetspeed getting one or two over on them only for Hurt Syndicate to absolutely wreck them. Jetspeed now comes out to the ring covered in tape like Diamond Dallas Page. They’ve now added The Patriarchy to add the suspense that maybe Hurt Syndicate loses the AEW World Tag Team Championship without getting pinned. Which, if this happens, will just further fuel people feeling like Bobby Lashley refuses to lose in AEW. Another Miro situation.
It’s so frustrating because I like Shelton and Bobby. I really do! Bobby Lashley in TNA (Impact Wrestling) in the mid 2010s was one of my favourite runs. I enjoy seeing Shelton Benjamin in the ring. I just think they are overpushed. Even if they lose the tag titles here (which would be the right decision) adding MJF to the team means they probably just slide into the Trios division and conquer that while better teams have to stand aside.
But again, I get it if you read this and think I’m just hating and not respecting a team that’s clearly over with AEW fans. Then again, so was House of Black, and we all can feel how good the product is without having to deal with them mucking up the tag and trios divisions. This is very close to a House of Black redux.
I just want every division in AEW to feel like we’re seeing the best face the best. I look at this three way tag and I do not believe for one second that’s the top three of AEW tag team wrestling.
