Forbidden Door 2025
Adam Copeland and Christian Cage versus Kip Sabian and Nick Wayne

For a lot of people this program has been rushed. For me? It’s about damn time.
All Elite Wrestling had to wait due to Adam Copeland’s injuries, but also had to wait due to him having to do this angle with Jon Moxley at the start of 2025 that was just not right for the AEW Men’s World Championship or the story Jon Moxley had been telling. There could have been a place it worked, had Cope played himself up a little “subtle heel” by saying he was being a veteran and having to step up in a locker room full of people who didn’t know how to step up. Instead Cope played the good guy and it didn’t work.
He also played a neglectful friend to FTR, which did build well into their turn on him, and is the match we all know will be happening at All Out Toronto. That said, I would have preferred FTR and Cope to have a proper Trios Championship run instead of him doing the match with Moxley. If you’re going to do the match? Do it as a TV main event and not headlining Revolution.
As for Christian Cage? Once the program with Cope was over in 2024 he had a bit of a bumpy ride. He didn’t really feel like a top heel going up against Swerve Strickland, even if he was a reliable hand to be the first title defence. The Patriarchy had an extremely short Trios Championship run, so short I had forgotten about it before writing this. He sort of feuded with Jay White and Hangman Adam Page while really feuding with Hook in a feud that went nowhere. It shouldn’t have been him feuding with Hook. It should have been Nick Wayne.
Christian Cage has also held the briefcase for an instant title shot, or Instashot as I’ve called it, which has been a bit of a black cloud following him for as long as he had it. Everyone feared him winning the title that way, the way the lesser interesting wrestling promotions do it. He finally cashed in at Revolution, but did the right thing in being fresh to the match and still getting his ass kicked immediately and costing both him and Adam Copeland the chance to beat Jon Moxley.
Christian was adamant he wanted to complete his story with Nick Wayne and The Patriarchy, which is why this whole reunion between Adam Copeland and Christian Cage didn’t come sooner. But now with All In Texas leading to the turn, some wondered why things are moving so quickly along.
For myself? I don’t really feel they are. Adam Copeland told Christian Cage to find himself. The first week he didn’t. He still tried to play the heel hating the crowd and it all came out inauthentic and weak. It was a bad promo. Essentially, the save by Adam Copeland at All In Texas changed him, and if it was up to me? We would have never even got that bad promo. Christian Cage would have known immediately to be the shit talking father to the heels instead of the babyfaces.
With Adam Copeland getting beaten down, Christian Cage ran for the save with the dumb stick with nails in it and Copeland gave him a hug. A lot of people have complained about the hug but they really don’t focus on the fact Christian really wasn’t having it yet. Having this match announced makes them think the turn is here. I think there’s still going to be some growing pains.
This is however a big reunion. The biggest reunion since Oasis. The two haven’t been a tag team in almost 20 years. I don’t blame anyone who just feels like this is two old men getting a spotlight to do their last run and giving little in return, and you’d be correct about Adam Copeland. With Christian Cage? He has been fantastic for AEW, dyed in the woll, and in his own words since his debut? He’s done the work.
That’s why I’m good with this when I’ve been critical about other retirement acts. Half good with it.
I’m also happy to see Nick Wayne and Kip Sabian get a pay per view tag team match. Christian wanted to properly end the story of The Patriarchy and give Nick something, and this is something. If they had more time, I wonder if they would have done a singles match on Dynamite and have Christian Cage put Nick Wayne over. That might still be in the cards. And Kip. Good ol’ Kip. AEW Original 2019 Kip Sabian. I’m always happy to see him.
Anyway, I haven’t talked a lot about the match because we all know this is just a stepping stone to get to Adam Copeland and Christian Cage versus FTR. The result is likely obvious, but I think seeing Christian and Cope on the same side of the ring is still pretty special after almost 20 years. As many missteps as there might have been in getting here? I’m glad we’re getting here in AEW.
