Trios Match
The Hurt Syndicate versus Ricochet and Gates of Agony
I promise I’ll be not as hard on Hurt Syndicate now that they are no longer AEW World Tag Team Champions.
It’s still a little surprising their match has been set before the actual AEW World Tag Team Champions (we know the match they are having but not their opponents) but I’ll let it slide.
I am a big fan of how they were able to build this out of things we thought AEW forgot about. The Hurt Syndicate business card never really had much of a payoff, unless you count the weeks of Maxwell Jacob Friedman trying to get into the Hurt Syndicate. There were victims prior to Max, and Ricochet was one of them.
Will we ever get closure on the Hurt Syndicate story with MJF? Probably not, but I’ll take a payoff to Ricochet getting threatened and punked out by Hurt Syndicate only to cost them the AEW World Tag Team Championship over it.
The frustrating part is this isn’t just a tag team match between Gates of Agony and Bobby/Shelton, which would have been awesome, but a trios match. Getting Ricochet on the show just makes sense. But MVP?
I genuinely like MVP (I really do) but the moment Hurt Syndicate fell apart as a concept for me was when he was building himself up as a BJJ expert only to wrestle in a match in an AEW ring, almost immediately gas out, and then resort to his WWE taunts and signature moves because he couldn’t actually present himself as a superior athlete.
I really hope this performance ends up better, because if not? He’s going to get exposed in this match in ways I’m not sure he’s prepared for. Gates of Agony are likely young and respectful, but Ricochet is going to make MVP look like a dinosaur. Not the trampling theme park dinosaur, but the fake bones in a museum dinosaur.
Either way, this is a good place for Hurt Syndicate, and I’m happy to see Gates of Agony get this shot on pay per view. I’ve been in their corner for a while and I would love to see them get a shot at Brodido in the future. Ricochet I had supported the idea of him getting a title shot against Hangman at some point and I’m still good with that.
