Blue League Overview

I was absolutely wrong on my prediction that Jon Moxley would be going 0-5. Definitely thought that would be the way they were going and was clearly missing it. I thought AEW would zag at Full Gear on Moxley’s downfall as leader of the Death Riders but now they are zagging here. No other surprises.

Gold League Overview

The surprises are all on the side of the Gold League. Kyle Fletcher once again defeats Kazuchika Okada just like he did last year. Kevin Knight shocks Darby Allin, which means Darby has now lost his first C2 match twice. It was an upset when he lost to Brody King, even though he was wrapped in tape and beaten up from Full Gear. This time he was relatively healthy, just having lost the match to PAC at Full Gear, and yet he went down to Knight in an upset.

I usually do a review on the weeks matches but this week I’m not feeling great. I’ll instead just review the matches for tonight at Dynamite in Fishers, Indiana currently announced.

Blue League: Claudio Castagnoli (1-0) versus Jon Moxley (1-0)

I did not expect them to come out with this so early. I thought this would most definitely be a final week Continental Classic bout. That tells me that maybe the plan for this isn’t the breakdown of the Death Riders. Then again, what else could possibly happen here? It’s the leader versus his right hand man.

Nothing could create dissension in the ranks quite like having these two get a little too violent with each other. Of course, the heart of the Blackpool Combat Club was Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley fighting at Revolution and it eventually leading to William Regal separating them and telling them to come with him. That faction is dead, and now we have the Death Riders. If Moxley wins, will Claudio just fall in line? If Claudio wins, how will that shake the confidence in Moxley of the other Death Riders? If it goes to a draw, you’d have to come back to it later.

Still, doing this in week two has me wondering just how this all shakes out.

Gold League: PAC (1-0) versus Kazuchika Okada (0-1)

Okada has to get back in the win column if he wants to defend his Continental Championship crown but he has to do it against the most aggressive member of the Death Riders. PAC and Okada met before at Dynasty 2024 when Kazuchika Okada defended the AEW Continental Championship against him. That was an incredible match that opened the show and might have got forgotten as one of the best matches of 2024. It’s also another example of how anyone saying Okada is lazy in AEW isn’t paying attention.

This is a bit of a new PAC, but he’s going to have to be as murderous and aggressive as he was with Darby Allin at Full Gear if he wants to stop Kazuchika Okada from beating him in this tournament match. Last year Okada’s first match ended with a draw, and he followed it with a win against Mark Briscoe. At worst he can take a draw, but he absolutely needs this win.

Expect more Continental Classic matches announced later tonight.

Tune in next week for coverage of week two.
