AEW Women’s World Championship
4-Way
Hikaru Shida, Jamie Hayter, Kris Statlander, and Thekla (c)

I found it pretty peculiar that on the show before Double or Nothing we had Thekla in an eight women tag match and only one of her opponents at Double or Nothing was across the ring. That being Jamie Hayter. Instead, two of them were cutting a promo before the show.

In that promo we learned that Kris Statlander is just getting cleared for Double or Nothing and Hikaru Shida continues to tip toe the line between good and evil. She’s just being a stinker. A little stinker.

A match like this is unfortunately the design of the division watered down due to unfortunate injuries and time off, but also the building of the tag team division, which has a clear number one contender in the Brawling Birds but they don’t want them facing Divine Dominion just yet. Divine Dominion is instead working the Buy In on their five minute challenges. Alex Windsor was supposed to face Willow Nightingale but she had to withdraw from the tournament. Jamie Hayter is getting another title shot against Thekla, and found herself on the losing end of the aforementioned eight women tag.

Who knows what kind of shape Kris Statlander ends up being in for this match, if she’s simply cleared to battle but still a hurting unit or if she’s 100%. One must think that’s going to play into how Hikaru Shida works her strategy, proclaiming herself a friend of Kris but ready to stab her in the back at moment’s notice.

With the Willow injury I’m actually not sure how things will shake out now. My original thought process was that Hikaru Shida would eventually be bringing out her true friend Syuri and forming the second top heel tag team for the women’s division, facing off against Kris and Willow before eventually facing Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa once Storm had returned. That would also allow them to eventually face the Brawling Birds, should they become AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions. Suddenly you have a healthy tag division.

With Willow out? I don’t really know what the plan is. Shida could still turn on Statlander, maybe put her on the shelf, and either stick around the singles division as the number two heel behind Thekla, or still bring out Syuri. That still leaves one to wonder exactly who Thekla ends up dancing with, as she seems to always be without dance partners these days.

That at least bodes well on her keeping the championship, as I doubt she drops it to anyone available unless they win the Owen Hart Women’s Tournament. That plays into the prediction portion of this, but while I don’t see a just cleared Statlander winning or a Brawling Birds focused Jamie Hayter winning, I could absolutely see Shida’s betrayal going from just the most entertaining story in AEW not enough are talking about to the primary focus of the women’s division.

Only one other woman has held the AEW Women’s World Championship four times and her name is Timeless Toni Storm. I wonder who took her out.
