All Out 2025
Eddie Kingston versus Big Bill

The return of the Mad King.

A lot of talk as to how he’s returning like this instead of a surprise. I think this is absolutely how Eddie Kingston wanted to return. He didn’t want to just pop in. He wanted to be challenged.

Kingston just doesn’t operate like most wrestlers today. He’s absolutely focused on keeping the fight in pro wrestling alive. The purpose of everything he does is about wanting a fight. It doesn’t make sense in Kingston’s philosophy for him to return as a run-in. A run-in isn’t a fight. A scheduled match is a fight.

While they could have made him a surprise, as he was a surprise in his debut for AEW in challenging Cody Rhodes for the TNT Championship, some might forget the context of that week. Everyone thought Warhorse was going to be Cody’s opponent that week and Eddie Kingston showed up almost taking his spot in a way to challenge Cody to a no disqualification match. Eddie had to show up unannounced. He wasn’t an AEW star yet.

Now he is. And having Big Bill make this challenge, it helps give Big Bill a platform and a major singles match on pay per view, something he has deserved for a while now. I still think he should be a babyface, but AEW has a lot of babyfaces right now. They need heels, and Big Bill is going to do everything he can to fill that role.

If Big Bill just issued an open challenge to anyone and lost, it would effectively hurt him. By calling his shot, calling out Eddie Kingston, and making it about Eddie? It’s less about a guy just challenging anyone to a fight and getting beat. It’s about having to beat the Mad King himself. He’s challenging a man at his lowest to meet him for a warrior’s death.

I’ve said before that this has reminded me of Bret Hart being challenged by Stone Cold Steve Austin back in 1996. Back then, Bret had taken a break after losing his world championship in the WWF and was off doing movies. Austin’s challenges to Bret was a way to let everyone know that Hart was coming back and he had this nefarious heel waiting for him at the door.

The circumstances are not the same but I think the structure is there for a similar challenge. This helps everyone involved to look their best. Win or lose, Big Bill looks great here. Win or lose, Eddie Kingston will get one of the biggest reactions of the night.

AEW is going to be more exciting with the Mad King returning. The false king Jon Moxley has been dethroned. Take your seat.
