Tables and Tacks
Mark Briscoe versus Maxwell Jacob Friedman

When Maxwell Jacob Friedman got his title shot back before Forbidden Door I was frustrated. It wasn’t the way AEW should have went with things. It was a real rug pull on AEW fans in the direction they were going. It set up a situation where MJF, the heel who thinks he can get always find an easy way out, was losing his security.
I thought that set the stage to create a more brutal, violent, hateful MJF that held it against the world for finally making him work hard for something. After all of his attempts to find an easy way through the path, he was going to be forced through the mud. While some might see that as admirable, a babyface thing to do, I saw it like There Will Be Blood. He was going to make everyone suffer for what he went through, and he would hold it over everyone as a prize.
But now, MJF has his security blanket back. He has a title shot any time he wants it, but he has to wait a week before he can actually get it. This does defang the Instashot, but it means it still exists.
Now MJF has to clean up his loose ends. He needs to face Mistico at CMLL’s 92 Anniversaro in a mask versus title match. He also needs to settle the score with Mark Briscoe.
Briscoe has struggled to get beyond the midcard, losing a lot of big matches whenever he gets the chance to move up. Setting aside his loss to MJF, Briscoe recently lost to Konosuke Takeshita. He lost to Kazuchika Okada. He lost to Jon Moxley. He lost in the first round of the AEW International Eliminator Tournament to Mark Davis back in March. He beat Kyle Fletcher in the Continental Classic but has twice lost to him since including on pay per view.
That’s why MJF said Mark can’t win the big one. But Mark Briscoe helped cost MJF the match at Forbidden Door by just making his presence felt, and MJF knows he cannot move forward until he takes care of Mark Briscoe.
This isn’t for predictions, but Maxwell Jacob Friedman’s promo is bringing the brutal, violent, hateful version of Max I wanted to see for his next shot at Hangman Adam Page. And that brutality, violence, and marriage to hate is best to come out after a loss in a tables and tacks match.
MJF is already heading down that path, but losing to Mistico and losing to Mark Briscoe is just the sort of losses his ego will not be able to take. And it will be those losses, coupled with the loss from Forbidden Door, to truly push MJF over the line in being the number one heel in professional wrestling.
As for Mark Briscoe? I don’t know where he goes next after Maxwell, but he’s had such a great career in AEW so far, I feel like he can do anything and it’s going to be good.
