Double or Nothing 2025
AEW World Tag Team Championship
The Sons of Texas versus Hurt Syndicate (c)

I have been trying my level best to not be too frustrated about the AEW World Tag Team Champions.

I do not want anyone to think I’m in some way against Hurt Syndicate being at this level. I’m not. When they came in they came in with a lot of impact and it made sense at the time, with Private Party’s title run being less than successful, for Hurt Syndicate to come in and just truck them over.

The problem is that they did not help the tag team division. They faced The Gunns only for The Gunns to disappear. Gunns didn’t really earn that title shot. They faced The Outrunners in one of the worst matches of Revolution, a match they got because Hurt Syndicate did an entrance music distraction on Brian Cage and Lance Archer. Not exactly championship material. They faced Learning Tree because Brian Cage got injured at Dynasty. They had a match at Spring BreakThru against Gates of Agony, who got their shot winning a bunch of matches in ROH and then squashing *checks notes* Smash and Burn? Oh, also Hurt Syndicate squashed Top Flight.

This is the title run of Hurt Syndicate. How’s the rest of the division doing?

FTR returned as heels and actually look like AEW World Tag Team Championship calibre.

The Young Bucks returned having great multi-man matches and beat Kevin Knight and Speedball Mike Bailey.

Kevin Knight and Speedball Mike Bailey have potential to be a good tag team once Knight returns from Best of Super Juniors and G1-Climax.

The Don Callis Family has Murder Machines once Brian Cage returns, has RPG Vice with Trent and Rocky, and has had Konosuke Takeshita and Josh Alexander building some chemistry in tag team matches.

The Learning Tree just beat Gates of Agony in a Chicago Street Fight.

Brody King is just waiting for Buddy Matthews to return from injury to re-form the Hounds of Hell.

Paragon has lost two matches to FTR but absolutely have potential in being a great tag team for the division. Roderick Strong and Kyle O’Reilly already have experience as tag champions in other promotions.

LFI with Rush, Dralistico, and Beast Mortos could work either trios or tags.

Heck, Aussie Open could reform any time.

And then you got Sons of Texas. Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara. Sammy and Dustin spend most of their time in Ring of Honor, as Sammy and Dustin wear the ROH World Tag Team Championship. Dustin also holds the ROH Six Man Tag Team Championship with the Von Erich’s. Those titles are rarely defended.

Sammy came back to AEW by winning a $100,000 Prize High Speed Collision Four Way against AR Fox, Kevin Knight, and Rush. Why did he win that match? What was the purpose? It certainly wasn’t to build up to a match against Hurt Syndicate.

Instead, Sons of Texas beat CRU (I didn’t bring them up intentionally), a team that traded wins with Top Flight, in the main event of Collision to become the number one contenders. Sons of Texas really didn’t earn that shot. FTR, if anyone, should have been getting a tag title shot.

Why do I care about this match? What makes it important?

The only thing we know is that this is the first time in a while Hurt Syndicate remembered they are AEW World Tag Team Champions, because everything they do on Dynamite is just about Maxwell Jacob Friedman.

The entire division is basically in limbo because we had to see whether or not Bobby Lashley would give MJF a thumbs up every week. The segments sucked. They just sucked. I guess some people in the crowd enjoyed it, but it was boring TV for me. It’s just the same segment over and over until they finally decide to have a resolution.

That resolution is the go home of Dynamite. Not something about Sons of Texas versus Hurt Syndicate. It’s MJF signing his contract to join the Hurt Syndicate. If MJF turns on them instead of signing? It won’t be in support of the AEW World Tag Team Championship. If MJF gets turned on? It won’t be in support of the AEW World Tag Team Championship. If MJF joins and they agree to support him on his road to the AEW Men’s World Championship? It won’t be in support of the AEW World Tag Team Championship. If they decide to be a trios and go after the AEW Trios Championship held by The Opps? It won’t be in support of the AEW World Tag Team Championship.

The only interesting idea I’ve considered is Hurt Syndicate bringing back the 10 lashes and making MJF eat those lashes to join the Hurt Syndicate. But that, even if interesting and would develop the MJF character in a more interesting way? It won’t be in support of the AEW World Tag Team Championship! None of it will!

And if Sons of Texas try to get involved it will make no sense for the MJF/Hurt Syndicate story, so it will hurt the program people have been following for weeks. Do you see the issue?

I wouldn’t be so negative about this if it didn’t involve the World Tag Team Championship. Hurt Syndicate have not been exciting champions, and despite AEW finally working to make teams in the undercard, midcard, and uppercard interesting and diverse? The team at the top feels completely disassociated. They only associate to crush a developed team.

I also am tired of Dustin basically holding two titles hostage in ROH. The Dark Order have worked hard as a team in ROH. They would make much better ROH Six Man Tag Champs but AEW insists on having the Von Erichs as champs in Texas. Teams like The Frat House and Shane Taylor Promotions and MxM Collection have been trying to develop in ROH. You can’t develop if you know they will never be tag champs. ROH needs to give another team those titles to run and develop ROH. Dark Order, Top Flight, CRU, Grizzled Young Vets? All of them could be good ROH World Tag Champs. Dustin and Sammy are the same problem in ROH that Hurt Syndicate are in AEW.

I don’t care how they have to get those AEW World Tag Team Championship titles off of Hurt Syndicate. At this point I don’t care if they just vacate them. I just want a real tag team that works in the tag division to wear them. Someone like the Bucks. Someone like FTR. Maybe Christian Cage and Cope finally forms. Maybe Jack Perry returns to Luchasaurus to reform Jurassic Express. Maybe one of these many teams can step up. I’m good with any of them. I’m just not good with Hurt Syndicate holding the division hostage so they can do lame joke segments with MJF. It’s a waste of everyone’s potential and everyone’s time.
