AEW Dynasty 2025
AEW Women’s World Championship
Megan Bayne versus Timeless Toni Storm

How well do you remember the pandemic years of AEW?
At Double or Nothing 2020, Brian Cage made his debut in the company and won the Casino Ladder match, giving him a title shot against Jon Moxley for the AEW Men’s World Championship at a later date. Cage proceeded to crush his opponents after under the tutelage of Taz in short order. Taz also proclaimed him the new FTW Champion after their match got delayed to Fight for the Fallen.
In those two months building up to their big match, the hype and presentation of Brian Cage as a contender went so well that online there were people arguing that Brian Cage was not only going to beat Moxley for the title, but he had to. If he didn’t beat Moxley it would be a waste of the build up in making him this monster contender.
Cage would lose that match due to Taz throwing in the towel. We haven’t seen a finish like that in a while, but it was a great way to protect Cage while also ensuring a victory for Jon Moxley. Mox never pinned or submitted Brian Cage, but Cage also never won the title.
I’m discussing this here because I think AEW has done just as good of a job building up Megan Bayne as they did for Brian Cage. She’s been an absolute monster in the women’s division since making her official return debut (Bayne worked some shows for AEW prior to her Stardom excursion) for All Elite Wrestling and unlike Cage, has also beaten some name opponents.
Kris Statlander has fallen twice to Bayne and Thunder Rosa lost to her as well. Bayne also won two tag team matches with Penelope Ford, with the most recent including her pinning AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm.
Bayne does look and feel like an unstoppable monster, to the point where people have felt she has to beat Toni Storm, even though Toni is the biggest babyface in the company and just got her championship back in February.
It’s a similar situation, and it is a testament to AEW doing a great job booking a monster heel to face the fresh champion and make one wonder if maybe, just maybe, the most important story isn’t Toni being champion once again but Megan Bayne being the Gozerian traveler to destroy the AEW Women’s division just as it is at its peak in the company.
My personal viewpoint is that this is actually how you should be building up most of your contenders. They should look like they could beat the champion. They should feel like they have incredible momentum. That’s what makes someone a great champion, when they can defeat those who feel inevitable to beat them. A great championship run isn’t based on length or number of opponents. It’s the quality of the contenders who you beat that truly makes a run great.
Toni Storm has defeated her greatest rival in Mariah May in a fantastic Hollywood Ending at Revolution. Now it’s time for her to prove she’s more than just this one program by surviving whatever Megan Bayne tries to do to her.
For one to be truly timeless, they need the performances to prove it. It’s time for Storm to prove once again she can perform against anyone who tries to take the spotlight from her.
