Forbidden Door 2025
AEW Women’s World Championship
Athena versus Timeless Toni Storm (c)

The challenge of Athena to Timeless Toni Storm has been very interesting to me.

I don’t know what plans Tony Khan really has for the ROH Women’s World Championship. He’s had multiple strong opportunities to take it off Athena and instead kept it on her? Does he care so much about her as ROH Champion he needs her to hold it for 1,000 days before having her drop it? Or does he not care at all?

Yet there’s another champion facing Toni Storm. First it was Mercedes Moné as TBS Champion and now Athena as ROH Women’s World Champion. It worries me when a champion just fights other champions. It tells me we might be nearing the end of that reign because the only thing the booker can think of is having them face other champions.

If Storm defeats Athena it certainly establishes her as the best women’s wrestler in the company. Most powerful title, most success. There isn’t very many opponents left for her to face at that point, and not many heels either.

Athena would be a pretty fresh champion and open up a wealth of opportunities. There’s a lot of babyface women right now in the company people keep crying for a shot. There’s whatever alignment you put to Kris Statlander, Willow Nightingale, Alex Windsor, Mina Shirakawa (facing Athena in ROH), and potential returns of Hikaru Shida and Riho.

Of course, with Moné still TBS Champion? A lot of those matches could go towards her.

We’re absolutely getting to the point where Timeless Toni Storm might be out of strong stories as champion because she’s beaten everyone and has nothing left to accomplish. Which, if true? Is that such a bad thing? She’s still incredibly over, a great ambassador for the company, and hasn’t lost a lick of steam. Maybe just having a dominant world champion is better than story opportunities.

So that’s my intrigue on this match. Athena winning would make her women’s world champion of two companies, and that makes losing one of the belts harder. The most contender opportunities, however, land if Athena is champion. Meanwhile, Toni Storm has nothing left to accomplish, but having nothing left to accomplish still means you can be a great champion against anyone coming to take your crown.

The feud itself has been interesting in seeing Athena in AEW and reminding people why she’s one of the absolute best in the business. Keeping her in ROH over using her in AEW has allowed her to be a star away from the eyes of many, and while she was far overqualified to work Ring of Honor, this has allowed her to be as polished as possible in AEW now. It’s no surprise she’s already working at the top, and it’s why it’s only inevitable she eventually wins the title.

All of this builds into the intrigue, and if anything? This is likely a program that goes beyond Forbidden Door and slips right into All Out Toronto. Would love to see those two get a rematch regardless of the result here.
