Mariah May versus Timeless Toni Storm (c)
I can’t remember the last time one wrestler made themselves and made their opponent quite like what Toni Storm has done in this program.
The “All About Eve” program between Toni Storm and Mariah May has been absolutely exceptional. It’s one of the greatest stories AEW has told. I would put it right up there with Hangman Page’s ascension against Kenny Omega and The Elite. It has transformed two wrestlers. One was already a star in her division, but now she’s more than just a “top name” and instead she’s the most charismatic and original character in the entire industry. As for Mariah May, she went from a good young star in Stardom to a brand new rookie in AEW to the AEW Women’s World Champion.
I’ve had my overall issues with the program, from the way AEW poorly handled setting up babyfaces for Mariah May to face when she was champion, to how long it took for Toni to figure herself out in the ring along with the character. But now these issues don’t seem like such a problem now blurred into the tapestry of this beautiful piece of art. And I say that with no hyperbole. I have been thoroughly engrossed in this story.
If this is the Hollywood Ending? It’s hard to see where they both go. They absolutely need something new. The AEW Women’s World Championship has effectively been taken hostage by this entire story, and there’s a lot of women who need programs at the top to continue progressing. It’s going to be tough to see who can really handle the world of Toni Storm after this, and how Mariah May survives without being in the orbit of Toni.
That’s what made Toni’s promo on Dynamite so vicious. Mariah has been fantastic against Toni, absolutely a worthy contender, but we know she has a hard time navigating without Toni Storm. And then Toni Storm, eyes focused, shoulders straight and solid, pose held even with spit on her face, issues her sentence to Mariah’s career:
“You do not deserve the dignity of death. I sentence you to a lifetime of mediocrity. Your life will continue. Your career will continue. And it will be good! But never great. People will like you but never love you. Because the star that you are will never compare to the monster that you’ve become. So you will dwindle. Will be replaced and be forgotten. Then one day many years down the road someone will ask, whatever happened to Mariah May? She found out what happens when you try to kill God.”
Mariah is only 26, and this is the first real spotlight for her on a worldwide promotion like All Elite Wrestling, but it still feels like everything Timeless Toni Storm said to her may end up true. She may not be able to enjoy a life outside of the light of God. There will be a lingering question going forward with her if she can survive without her. Nobody is asking the same about Toni.
I loved this promo so much. I love how she’s essentially flipped the Devil talk of Maxwell Jacob Friedman and instead plays the role of God. She’s cast Mariah May as Satan thrown from hell as a negative. That’s a babyface for you. Calling yourself a God is usually a heel remark, but here it feels right. Toni is the creator. The performer. The actor. And after all the craziness and all of what felt like an insane woman character? It’s instead now just a reserved, confident, unwavering, and powerful woman who knows where the stage is and knows how she rules it.
This should be the main event of Revolution. There’s nothing the men can do to compare. It won’t be, because Tony Khan has to make sure the boys with their big contracts feel special, but we know this is the ending of one of the truly great feuds in All Elite Wrestling.
