WrestleDream 2025
Thekla versus Jamie Hayter

It’s rare for a women’s singles match without a title on the line to get on the main pay per view. Mercedes Moné beat Julia Hart at Dynasty 2025 in a singles match but it was the quarterfinal for the Owen Hart Foundation tournament. Kris Statlander beat Willow Nightingale at All Out 2024 but that was in a Chicago Street Fight, so there was at least a gimmick involved.

One must go all the way back to Full Gear 2022 when Saraya defeated Britt Baker in a singles match for the last time this happened. Almost three years since there was a womens match with no title on the line, no tournament, and no gimmick match.

Giving Hayter and Thekla this spotlight feels good to me, as it allows the singles women’s division to get a bit of spotlight before the women’s tag team division will need to be focused on. It helps build up contenders for both Mercedes Moné as TBS Champion and Kris Statlander as AEW Women’s World Champion. I do expect Statlander to face the winner of this match, regardless of the result. The loser might end up going against Moné even. That’s why this match is important for both competitors.

It’s really unfortunate that Jamie Hayter has dealt with injury set back after injury set back. She’s no different to Statlander as someone who should be a top star in the company but her injuries have come at such terrible times. It’s hard for her to really get her momentum going back when everyone is worried she isn’t going to make it beyond a program or two without going out due to injury. This match can hopefully be a statement that she’s healthy and ready to be a player again.

Thekla? What a great signing for All Elite Wrestling. She’s had a perfect introduction to the company. Not too rushed, building programs with everyone from Queen Aminata to Toni Storm. Her association to Skye Blue and Julia Hart has helped both women in their matches. She fits AEW like a glove, and this is a great platform for her.

The match will hopefully be one of my favourite dynamics in wrestling, which is essentially the reverse David versus Goliath. Jamie will be overpowering and destroying Thekla with strikes, but Thekla as the smaller faster wrestler will be all about slinging rocks to take the giant down. I’m excited to see how they work the dynamic.
