Casino Gauntlet Match
To Determine the First Ever
AEW National Champion

In Too Much Gold I discussed the AEW National Championship and who I thought could be the first champion.

My three choices were Ricochet, Orange Cassidy, and Jon Moxley.

Now as of publishing I do not know who is taking part in this match aside from Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin, Ricochet, Kevin Knight, and Speedball Mike Bailey. That means only one of my picks is guaranteed to be in this.

Jon Moxley as well is being rumoured for a match against Kyle O’Reilly to be announced on AEW Dynamite later tonight which would take him out of being in this as well. Orange Cassidy is still on the table.

I figure if they don’t do another multi wrestler match between Conglomeration and Death Riders, we should see members of both in this. That means OC, Roderick Strong, Claudio Castagnoli, Daniel Garcia, and Wheeler Yuta all in play. Or at least potentially in play.

There’s a few wrestlers who could return as surprises. We know Maxwell Jacob Friedman could be returning anytime soon. MJF is an interesting choice to win this. He has the AEW Men’s World Championship shot in his back pocket but maybe he holds off to be the first National Champion. I could see him really wanting to be the male counterpart to Mercedes Moné and working everywhere from NWA to MLW to returning in CMLL. I also still think he has a date with the Cowboy so I don’t see it being him.

There are some members of the Don Callis Family who could appear like Lance Archer, Mark Davis, Hechicero, and hey, Kazuchika Okada and Konosuke Takeshita are currently not booked. There’s also The Opps with Katsuyori Shibata and Powerhouse Hobbs not doing anything. Hobbs did such a fantastic job against Hangman Adam Page at Blood and Guts he should be a top contender for the title if he ends up in the match.

There’s also the former Opps in Hook (please no) and Eddie Kingston (please yes) who could be in this Casino Gauntlet match. I really hope we see Ace Austin after the great match he had with Kyle Fletcher.

Anyone else could appear? We haven’t seen Adam Copeland or Christian Cage in some time. I think AR Fox is coming back from injury soon. Buddy Matthews has been on the shelf for a while. Is Jay White close to returning? Where’s my boy Kip? Would love to see Matt Sydal return. I miss Ortiz. RUSH is perfect for a match like this. The Beast Mortos as well. I’m sure Sammy Guevara tries to find a way into a match like this.

Lots of people could be in it, but if the vision for the championship is someone to represent AEW? It needs to be someone with a good name who could work abroad. Someone that isn’t currently holding a title would be ideal, and someone who could provide some fresh matchups in competitor promotions.

So who would be my Top 5?

I’m still sticking with Orange Cassidy and Ricochet as high possibilities. I would consider Powerhouse Hobbs another good choice for that list. Eddie Kingston did just recently announce he was going to work his last year on the indies so what better than to have him do it representing All Elite Wrestling?

My fifth pick? Well… let’s take a little ride.

The most famous Triple Crown Championship in pro wrestling is without a doubt the Triple Crown Championship of All Japan Pro Wrestling. That was first consolidated by Jumbo Tsuruta on April 18, 1989. The three championships to create it? The NWA International Heavyweight Championship, the PWF World Heavyweight Championship, and the NWA United National Championship.

International.

United.

National.

Kazuchika Okada, as Unified Champion, wears the International and Continental Championships. Should he win the National? He has three championship titles (the Unified just represents the two titles) to his name. Thus allowing him to properly create a Triple Crown Championship in All Elite Wrestling.

I’m sure adding Okada to the top five will be a really dumb thing to waste time typing after Dynamite when they say he’s in a match teaming with Takeshita against whoever (didn’t Mark Briscoe get beaten up by the Don Callis Family? Maybe Conglomeration get revenge for him?) at Full Gear, but I’m sticking with this horribly constructed idea. AEW tried to do a Triple Crown originally when Eddie Kingston held the ROH World Championship, New Japan Strong Champion, and AEW Continental Championship. Maybe NJPW said no to forming a proper title. Now AEW can do it here.

Come on just give me this. Okada as Triple Crown Champion would be so much cooler than just Unified Champion.

Anyway. I’ve already put more thought into who could be in this match than All Elite Wrestling did announcing a new championship.
