AEW World Tag Championship
The Blackpool Combat Club versus The Young Bucks (c)
Last night on AEW Dynamite, The Young Bucks were challenged by Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta of the Blackpool Combat Club for the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
Usually I would be disappointed that the new AEW World Trios Champions are already not defending the championship on a pay per view, but the company had to give PAC his AEW International Championship shot after All In at some point, and it only made sense to do it at All Out. This left his two partners with nothing to do.
With Bryan Danielson facing Jack Perry for the AEW Men’s World Championship, it only made sense for Blackpool Combat Club to clash with The Elite once again, and I don’t mind it’s for the World Tag Team Championship.
I spoke plenty about the tiers of the AEW World Tag Team Championship division last week and identified Blackpool Combat Club as a Tier 2-B team, which is essentially not a tag team that’s established in the division but is a faction with well established members so they can quickly gain the reputation as a credible tag team.
What’s funny is when I brought up how rare it is for a non-title match on AEW Dynamite twice came up Claudio Castagnoli for Blackpool Combat Club. When you need a credible tag team match without the tag title involved in 2024? Claudio has been your man. He’s credible enough to do this on short notice.
This is also much more fresh than having The Acclaimed or FTR pop up for another tag title rematch. We’ve been there and done that. FTR is hopefully moving on to a match with Grizzled Young Vets (I’m hoping that gets announced as a Zero Hour match for All Out) while The Acclaimed… been a bit quiet since All In. It’s only been two weeks but it’ll be interesting to see if they even stay in the Tag Team Division or not. If they move to the Trios? They might be meeting PAC and Blackpool Combat Club.
I for one am glad we’ve been seeing AEW respond to criticism of the championships not being defended enough. Kazuchika Okada and now The Young Bucks will have defended their championships three times in three weeks after All Out. It doesn’t have to stay at this pace, but having at least one defence per month isn’t too much to ask I’d say.
I don’t think there’s any plan to have the Trios Champions to be holding two sets of gold like they just had when the Bang Bang Gang held the ROH Six Man Championship at the same time as the AEW Trios Championship. PAC winning the International and Claudio/Yuta winning the Tag Team Championship would create that situation.
That said, I do wonder if the Young Bucks taking this match on short notice could be bad for them, and might lead to them biting off more than they can chew. All In to All Out has been a frantic pace for the Bucks, and as lazy evil authority heels this has certainly been testing if they can still put in their workhorse shoes and be the best damn tag team in the world.
I expect a great match, and hopefully this is a refresh for the Tag Team Division.
