TBS Championship
Hikaru Shida versus Mercedes Moné

It’s rare for a challenger to get a second title shot in under a month, but that’s just the way it goes when you open up a four way number one contenders match.

On Collision last week, Hikaru Shida pinned Queen Aminata in a match also including Serena Deeb and Thunder Rosa to become the number one contender for the TBS Championship. Just a few weeks prior on August 8th, 2024, Shida had lost against Mercedes in a shot for the TBS Championship in Norfolk, Virginia.

Shida hasn’t been having that great of a 2024 in All Elite Wrestling and at times we’ve seen her frustration bubble over. She’s insisted she’s the Ace of the Women’s Division in AEW and it’s hard to argue with her record as a 2019 original. In 2024 she’s had some wins against the likes of Anna Jay, Queen Aminata, and Rachael Ellering, but she’s faced tough losses when going for a championship. She lost to Athena for the ROH Women’s World Championship, lost to Mariah May in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, and now the loss to Moné in Norfolk.

But this second shot is hope she can turn the tide around. It won’t be easy as Mercedes has a lot of momentum at this point as champion. Her win against Britt Baker in All In had her clearly the favourite, as she certainly worked at a pace DMD struggled to keep up with. Mercedes had every advantage possible, from in-ring ability to Brickhouse Kamille to a legion of corgi’s.

A win over Hikaru Shida again could be Mercedes solidifying herself as The Ace of the AEW Women’s Division despite only being in the company for a few months, a way of making it clear she’s above and beyond the rest in the division. Afterwards Mercedes is going to have to wait and see who emerges as a contender, whether Timeless Toni Storm is going to make her way towards her instead of getting revenge against Mariah May, or if someone like Willow Nightingale tries her again after her complications with Kris Statlander.

For Hikaru Shida? This match is a lot bigger. As I said, she hasn’t had a lot of luck in returning back to the promised land, and getting this title shot is a rarity. It isn’t even a month since her last TBS shot. It’s hard to ever see her get an opportunity like this again for the rest of the year if Mercedes is able to pull out another win. She can’t let Kamille be the difference again.

This is just a preview, but I actually could see Hikaru Shida defeating Mercedes Moné in a shocker and becoming the TBS Champion. It would make her the first woman to have held both the Women’s World Championship and TBS at separate times. If you’re going to call yourself an Ace you should be able to represent both tips of the mountain. There’s a lot more heel women’s contenders than babyface, so having someone like Shida at the top ensures everyone from Serena Deeb, Kris Statlander, Harley Cameron, and of course Mercedes Moné would be heading after her.

I would be remiss if it I didn’t mention that Jamie Hayter is also back in All Elite Wrestling, and if Mercedes Moné is able to get beyond Hikaru Shida, she better be worried about the force of nature that’s Hayter coming for her throat. She’s one of the few women strong enough to withstand anything Brickhouse Kamille brings at her, plus fight Moné in the ring.

I am looking forward to this rematch and I’m actually glad things worked out this way, because when it comes to the AEW roster, Mercedes has had the most chemistry in the ring with Hikaru Shida. Their first match was a good TV match with a lot of people recognizing they looked like they were holding a bit back. Now they don’t need to. All Out needs these two to live up to the name of the show. Give us a classic.
