AEW International Championship
Kenny Omega versus Konosuke Takeshita (c)
Kenny Omega has never only been about the World Championship. He held the AEW World Tag Team Championship prior to the Men’s World, and held the Trios soon after. But Kenny has never cared about the TNT Championship. He hasn’t really been around to care about the Continental Championship, as the first tournament started just around the time he departed from his diverticulitis injury. Kenny also defeated Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 17 at the start of 2023.
The All-Atlantic/International has been around a little bit, but he was still focused on the AEW Men’s World Championship then. The Championship, unveiled in 2022, has been held by PAC, Orange Cassidy, Jon Moxley, Rey Fenix, Roderick Strong, Will Ospreay, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, and Konosuke Takeshita. There isn’t a weak wrestler in that bunch. It’s absolutely a wrestler’s championship, with high expectations of in-ring ability to be able to wear it. It’s a championship which if Kenny Omega was 10 years younger he definitely would have set his sights on prior to becoming Men’s World Champion.
Omega, now 41, instead of going straight at Jon Moxley since returning to AEW, will instead try to finally put to bed the Don Callis Family chapter of his career. Before he left due to the diverticulitis, he was still embroiled in a feud against them. In returning, he’s found an unlikely ally in Will Ospreay who he once battled in the Don Callis Family and finds himself once again facing Konosuke Takeshita. Takeshita defeated Kenny Omega at All Out back in 2023. This time it’s for the AEW International Championship.
Takeshita won the International Championship in a three way at WrestleDream 2024 against Ricochet and then champion Will Ospreay. Takeshita has ensured that he wouldn’t just be defending the title in AEW but anywhere in the world. He defended it in Canada against Josh Alexander at Maple Leaf Pro, TJ Perkins at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Fighting Spirit Unleashed, and Shingo Takagi at Wrestle Kingdom 19 with the NEVER Openweight Championship also on the line. He also faced Tomohiro Ishii at Wrestle Dynasty. In AEW, Takeshita has defended against Ricochet, Powerhouse Hobbs, Katsuyori Shibata, and Orange Cassidy last week.
Takeshita has been a great champion in ring, and is easily one of the best heavyweight wrestlers in the world today. Unfortunately, he doesn’t stand out in AEW as much as he should, as Kyle Fletcher has blossomed as a top heel in the company and takes much of the attention in the Don Callis Family. He’s also done a lot of things you would have thought Takeshita would, like beating Will Ospreay in a singles match and defeating Kazuchika Okada.
Takeshita, ever since working the NJPW G1 Climax, looks like he’s looking more and more to trying for gold in New Japan Pro Wrestling beyond the NEVER Openweight Championship he won than representing All Elite Wrestling, and that’s what makes Kenny Omega’s comments so interesting. Kenny isn’t about settling scores. He’s about winning that International Championship. Is Takeshita really focused on retaining it? Or is his eyes already on larger gold in Japan?
I’m not sure if this match is going to reach the level of their match at All Out, which was an absolute classic. Kenny Omega hasn’t been the Kenny Omega of old, which is to be expected, these things take time, but I hope we see something closer to the performance he had against Gabe Kidd than his performance against Brian Cage earlier this year on Dynamite. If I can’t have 100% Kenny Omega of old, at least give me something closer to the Kidd match.
There’s no guarantee this ends in Kenny lifting up gold, as I’m sure Don Callis has something up his sleeve to ensure gold stays in the Don Callis Family.
