TBS Championship
Momo Watanabe versus Mercedes Moné (c)

At Grand Slam: Australia, Mercedes Moné defended the TBS Championship against Harley Cameron. Prior to the match, there were people who were hoping that in this moment, Harley Cameron would be defeating Moné for the championship.
And that’s good! You want believable contenders. But it’s clearly not the time yet to take the championship off of Mercedes. There’s still plenty of time in the reign and the stage needs to be bigger. Yes, Brisbane was a pretty big stage and a big moment for Australian stars but it’s not the right place for Mercedes to finally drop the TBS Championship.
Will Los Angeles be?
Momo Watanabe is an excellent wrestler from World Wonder Ring Stardom. Only 24 with already a decade of wrestling experience under her belt, she’s one of the standout members of HATE and a former member of Queen’s Quest. She’s held multiple tag championships (most recently with Thekla) but only once held a singles title in the Wonder of Stardom Championship, which she almost held for an entire year back in 2019.
Momo had a phenomenal match with Mayu Iwatani back in November at the NJPW/Stardom Historic X-Over II, losing her chance at winning the IWGP Women’s Championship. Momo was at ringside for Grand Slam: Australia and Mercedes shoved her championship in her face.
The two have already fought over the NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship back at Capital Collision in August, where Mercedes successfully defended the championship against Watanabe in the main event in Washington, DC. AEW President Tony Khan was likely excited to have a rematch after that.
It feels like every title match Momo has she gets closer and closer to winning singles gold again. From the Mercedes match a few months later she had an incredible match against Mayu Iwatani for the IWGP Women’s Championship, unable to secure a victory. She’s likely hoping that this time she’s able to get the victory against Mercedes.
As for Mercedes, she’s already looking to be planting seeds to what her true rival is going to be for the TBS Championship. Her confrontations with Billie Starkz have led to a back and forth between Athena and Mercedes on Twitter, which leads me to believe that Athena going after Mercedes at something like Y’All In Texas is going to be that large platform for when Mercedes finally drops the TBS Championship and considers becoming a champion for the fans and not just herself.
Momo, on the other hand, couldn’t give a crap about bigger stages. It’s about showing AEW fans now what she’s capable of, and winning her first singles championship since 2019.
(If anything here is incorrect about Stardom let me know. I’m only a casual viewer.)
